# How Long Do Solar Batteries Last? A Realistic UK Guide

Battery lifespan depends on chemistry, cycling behaviour, temperature and how 'end of life' is defined. Most manufacturers quote 10 years. Most batteries outlast that significantly.

A realistic guide to what you can expect from a home battery installed in the UK.

## How battery degradation works

Lithium batteries degrade through two mechanisms:

### Calendar ageing

Chemical degradation simply from existing — even an unused battery loses capacity over time. LFP has significantly better calendar ageing than NMC — relevant because home batteries spend much of the year at partial charge rather than cycling.

### Cycle degradation

Each charge-discharge cycle causes microscopic structural changes to the electrodes. The number of cycles before reaching 80% capacity is the cycle life specification.

## What '10-year warranty' actually means

A 10-year battery warranty typically covers capacity retention to 80% of original:

-   A 5.76 kWh battery warranted 10 years at 80% will provide ≥4.6 kWh of usable storage at year 10
-   The warranty doesn't mean the battery dies at year 10 — it guarantees performance to 80% for 10 years
-   Most LFP batteries operate well beyond warranty, reaching 80% at year 12–15 in normal domestic use

Daily cycle context

A battery cycling once per day reaches 3,650 cycles at 10 years and 5,475 cycles at 15 years. LFP batteries rated to 6,000 cycles therefore have meaningful life well beyond their warranty period.

## Factors that affect battery lifespan

### Temperature

Heat is the primary enemy. Cells operating consistently above 35°C degrade significantly faster. UK climate is generally battery-friendly. Installation matters: a north-facing garage is ideal; a loft is acceptable if insulated and ventilated but can reach 40°C+ on hot summer days.

### Depth of discharge

Consistently discharging to near-zero is harder on cells. Modern BMS prevent discharge below ~10–20% state of charge. Usable capacity figures already account for this buffer.

### Charge rate

Charging at maximum rate is more stressful than slower charging. Most domestic installations charge at 0.5C or slower — gentle on the cells.

### Smart charging behaviour

A well-managed battery — avoiding extreme temperatures, deep cycling and using time-of-use intelligently — will significantly outlast a poorly-managed one. This is why Alliant includes the Levelise Hub: it actively manages charging and discharging to maximise both financial return and longevity.

At 60% remaining capacity, a 5.76 kWh battery provides 3.46 kWh — still enough for basic overnight loads. Most homeowners replace or expand for performance reasons before physical failure.

## What happens when a battery reaches end of life?

### Replacement

Cells can be replaced without replacing the whole system. The Fox ESS inverter and Levelise Hub continue working with a new battery module — replacement cost is the battery only. Module costs are falling ~8–12% annually, so a 2035 replacement will likely cost significantly less.

### Recycling

LFP is substantially easier to recycle than NMC — cobalt-free chemistry, simpler material composition. UK battery recycling infrastructure is expanding alongside EV adoption.

### Repurposing

Batteries at 70–80% original capacity are valuable for second-life applications. EV batteries have already created a commercial repurposing market; home storage is likely to follow.
